La bandera dominicana está relacionada a la haitiana, pues no tanto. Juan Pablo Duarte, padre de la patria se inspiró en la bandera francesa, país al que visitó. Los más probable se inspiró en la bandera de la guardia nacional francesa que es más antigua. Fue confeccionada por María Trinidad Sánchez, María de Jesús Piña, Isabel Sosa y Concepción Bona. Esta era muy parecida a la bandera civil aunque por su impopularidad ya no se usa y se usa la versión actual que fue adoptada en 1854. Hay varias versiones de su origen y es que debido a que en ese momento en el país sólo habían banderas haitianas se les agregó una cruz para ser la primera bandera dominicana. Duarte nunca dijo que se inspiró en la bandera de Haití. Las tres banderas pertenecen a una no reconocida familia de banderas que derivan de la francesa. Otros países de la región que se inspiraron en el pabellón francés para diseñar su propia bandera fueron México y Costa Rica.
