El primer carnaval de todo el continente Americano fue celebrado en la actual República Dominicana, antigua Capitanía General de Santo Domingo en 1520. Tres siglos antes del famoso carnaval de Trinidad y Tobago del que erróneamente creen que fue el primero. El primer carnaval dominicano se realizó en febrero en las Ruinas de la Vega Vieja, en ocasión de una visita de Don Fray Bartolomé de las Casas. Los habitantes de la Vega se disfrazaban de moros y cristianos y realizaban festejos que evolucionaron en las celebraciones actuales. A diferencia de lo que muchos creen fue una actividad organizada por los europeos, en este caso españoles. Así que sí, esta es otra tradición originada en tierra dominicana.
