Un evento casi desconocido y hasta irrelevante es que la primera intervención estadounidense en la isla La Española fue en 1800. Sucedió en el lado español de la isla cuando aún no se terminaba de ceder a Francia. En ese entonces soldados estadounidenses liderados por el del teniente Isaac Hull desembarcaron en Puerto Plata con el objetivo de capturar al corsario francés Sándwich. Esto debido a que en ese entonces se estaba desarrollando la Quasi-war o guerra no declarada entre Estados Unidos y Francia. Después de una breve batalla lograron capturar a Sándwich y la fortaleza San Felipe fue atacado e invadido por las tropas. Aunque después se retirarían al cumplir su objetivo, más tarde el gobierno estadounidense condenaría el ataque al fuerte español al ser España neutral durante la guerra.
